“…everything is permissible (allowable and lawful) for me; but not all things are helpful (good for me to do, expedient and profitable when considered with other things) ….”- 1 Corinthians 6:12

As a child of God, do you know that not every song is healthy for you to listen to? This may sound strange, but I’ll explain. Songs are confessions and prophecies, they have spirits that go with them that impact the listeners negatively or positively. Songs are compositions made up of lyrics and tunes, with an intent to invoke a feeling or emotion in relation to a particular subject. They have the ability to produce in you certain feelings that in turn gravitate into actions which either bless you or put you in a place of restlessness. They can control our moods and even our lives because they are made up of words and words are the building blocks of our lives. Therefore, as a child of God, be mindful of the quality of songs that you listen to. Choose them wisely because whether you believe it or not, they play a role in your life. They can invite into your life unwanted and unpleasant spirits, or drive them out.

Remember the case of King Saul in the Bible, he was anointed king over the children of Israel; but along the line, he disobeyed God. So God rejected him as king and chose another to replace him. Now it happened, that when God rejected Saul, “…the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him…” (1 Samuel 16:14). So his servants recommended that he get a skilful player who would play the harp to calm his troubled spirit. Saul bought the idea and asked them to go ahead and get a harpist who turned out to be David the son of Jesse. When David came, the Bible recorded saying “… whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him…” (1 Samuel 16:23). This speaks volumes because it reveals to us what happens when we listen to music.

For Saul, his moment of refreshing came when the harpist played. Which lets us know that music a way of influencing us. My advice for you is that you train yourself to listen to Spirit-filled, Word-inspired songs because they will stir you up spiritually and make you sensitive to God and His voice.

Therefore, be smart enough to choose the songs you listen to. Don’t listen to songs that have ungodly lyrics, which have the ability to influence you in the wrong way. Rather, listen to songs that will impact your spirit, mind and life in general. It is the right thing to do. God bless you!
