“…a merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones…”

Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV)

In our opening text, the scriptures communicate to us such an important truth that is greatly ignored by many in times of difficulties. I mean they don’t care. When they are going through challenges, they want the whole world to know. They get sad, moody and gloomy because they don’t see any reason to be cheerful. They believe that is the right thing to do but the bible says “…a merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bone…” Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV). In the good news translation, it says “…being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is a slow death to be gloomy all the time…” Did you see that? Even if words don’t mean anything to you, this I believe should mean something to you. It says being gloomy all the time is a slow death, meaning if you are in the habit of always being sad because things are not working out, you are killing yourself slowly and you don’t even know it. Therefore, take advantage of this truth coming to you today and make the necessary adjustments. As long as life is concerned there will always be issues here and there but don’t let them determine your cheerfulness. We have already been told to count it all joy when we go through diverse challenges (James 1:2).

So your responsibility now is to maintain a joyful heart no matter what you face or go through because a merry heart is like medicine. When you are cheerful, you prolong your days but when you are always sad you are killing yourself slowly, so think about it, which one would you rather do. You might say there are some situations that do not permit you to be merry, so what can we do in such situations? Well, that is where you have been lied to and you have accepted the lie. Stop allowing situations to be the determining factor behind your joy. Let Jesus and the salvation which you have received from Him, be the source of your joy. When you live like this, even though things are not going the way you want them to go, you are still cheerful because trials don’t define who you are, Jesus does and He says you are victorious. And truly you are. Accept it and let it be your reality always. Praise God!

Let Jesus and the salvation you have received from Him, be your source of joy not your challenges!

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the joy of salvation you have given to me in Christ Jesus, I declare that this Joy continues to well up in me and drown all forms of sadness in the name of Jesus. Amen!
