“…a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophet cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know he feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves…” —1 Kings 4:1

What a story in our opening text! Not only has this woman lost her husband, but she had debts to pay. If we take a look at the scripture above, it’s easy to detect that this woman didn’t have any means to pay the debt she was in. Chances are there that she was solely dependent on her husband and was not working too. Considering the fact that she would not have been expecting the death of her husband, we can say she suddenly became a widow and was suddenly going to lose her sons too. This could be a lot for anyone to handle. And the truth is, things like this happen every day. People find themselves in sudden debts, or sometimes unexpected expenses that if they are not taken care of, there could be repercussions. It could be a hospital bill you didn’t plan for, repairs in the house you occupy, a car repair, school fees, house rent, food bills, etc. At this point what would you do? It’s important to know that no matter the bill, expenses or debts at hand it can be handled. The widowed woman shown in the Bible didn’t know what to do, and that was why she ran to the prophet for help. And the Prophet asked her what she had in the house, but she had nothing except a jar of oil.

So, the prophet was able to help her by giving her simple instructions on what to do with the oil she had. “…he said to her, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors, empty vessels, do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” 2 kings 4:3-4. (NKJV) “Then she came back and told the man of God. And he said,” “Go, sell the oil and pay all your debts; and you and your sons live on the rest.” 2 kings 4:7. Just like that, her bills were paid, and she had enough left to take care of herself and her sons. It’s amazing that when we run to God, those things we think we don’t know how to handle just become extremely easy. Who would have thought that the little jar of oil this woman had in the house could increase and fill the other empty jars she borrowed? Who would have thought mere instructions she followed saved her from a lifetime of sorrow? I don’t know the debts mounting up in your life, but today, you can make it disappear, just like the widowed woman. You can shut the door behind you and get instructions from God as to how He wants you to pay this debt. And before long, every debt would be paid. So, get to work, start listening to God and receive instructions for the next level. Amen!
