“…work and you will earn a living, if you sit around talking you will be poor…” Proverbs 14:23 (GNB)

As you study the Word of God, it helps you to develop the right mindset and attitude towards every area of life. And when you live by the dictates of the scriptures your life will take on an upward and forward movement. Therefore, it is important that you give attention to the scriptures and immerse yourself in it. I was studying the other day and I saw something I felt was worthy of note. It says “…work and you will earn a living, if you sit around talking you will be poor…” Proverbs 14:23 (GNB). Now, did you see that? This particular verse of the Bible gives us a secret to avoiding poverty. It says work and you will earn a living but if all you do is talk when you are supposed to be working, it means poverty will be the order of the day. Why? Because the principle of earning a living is working and not talking. But sadly, the reverse is the case. Too many of God’s people spend their time gossiping and discussing other people. They don’t mind their business, they want to comment on almost everything that is going on in the lives of others but God says, attitudes like that will only lead to poverty.

So what do we do as Christians? Avoid idle chatter and spend your time on things that will make you fruitful and productive in your life. Refuse to busy yourself with other people’s matter and focus on your life and goals. Say no to Gossip, backstabbing and murmuring, they will do you no good. You might say, but shouldn’t we talk about the things others are doing wrong or the things going wrong in their lives? Well, the answer to that question is, after you talk about it, does it solve the problems? No. Does it improve the person you are talking about? Certainly not. So why continue in that path. Gossip and idle chatter does not improve situations or people but destroys them. In the past, strife has been stirred up because of Gossip, enmity has come up between friends and relatives because of idle chatter. So you see that gossip and idle chatter is not the way forward. Therefore, I admonish you to stay away from all such. If you mistakenly find yourself in a place where such discussions are happening, walk away from it. Do not participate in it, because it is a total waste of time. Let your focus be on how to make yourself more profitable to you, your family and to the society at large. Praise God!
